Pairs of Convex Bodies with Centrally Symmetric Intersections of Translates

For a pair of convex bodies K and K ′ in Ed , the d-dimensional intersections K ∩ (x + K ′), x ∈ Ed , are centrally symmetric if and only if K and K ′ are represented as direct sums K = R ⊕ P and K ′ = R′ ⊕ P ′ such that: (i) R is a compact convex set of some dimension m, 0 ≤ m ≤ d, and R′ = z − R for a suitable vector z ∈ Ed , (ii) P and P ′ are isothetic parallelotopes, both of dimension d − m.

Intersections of Dilatates of Convex Bodies

We initiate a systematic investigation into the nature of the function αK (L, ρ) that gives the volume of the intersection of one convex body K in Rn and a dilatate ρL of another convex body L in Rn, as well as the function ηK (L, ρ) that gives the (n − 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the intersection of K and the boundary ∂(ρL) of ρL. The focus is on the concavity properties of αK (L, ρ). ...

Intersections of Descending Sequences of Affinely Equivalent Convex Bodies

Here it is shown that a set in Euclidean space can be represented as the intersection of a descending sequence of sets affinely equivalent to a given convex body, or arbitrarily closely approximated from above by sets affinely equivalent to the body, if and only if it is affinely equivalent to an affine retract of the body. For the special case in which the body is a simplex, the statement conc...

Intersections and translative integral formulas for boundaries of convex bodies

Let K,L ⊂ IRn be two convex bodies with non-empty interiors and with boundaries ∂K, ∂L, and let χ denote the Euler characteristic as defined in singular homology theory. We prove two translative integral formulas involving boundaries of convex bodies. It is shown that the integrals of the functions t 7→ χ(∂K ∩ (∂L + t)) and t 7→ χ(∂K ∩ (L + t)), t ∈ IRn, with respect to an ndimensional Haar mea...

On the visibility graph of convex translates

We show that the visibility graph of a set of non-intersecting translates of the same compact convex object in R always contains a Hamiltonian path. Furthermore, we show that every other edge in the Hamiltonian path can be used to obtain a perfect matching that is realized by a set of non-intersecting lines of sight. ? 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
